Code of Conduct for Teachers
Overview
Code of conduct for teachers has been in effect since the inception of this institution and was established after great deliberation and research. The current code of conduct document which has undergone some amendments is in effect since June 2019.
To Whom Does this Code of Conduct Apply?
The purpose of the CODE OF CONDUCT FOR TEACHERS is to provide a minimum level of practice for all early years, primary and elementary school teachers who have already achieved confirmed teacher status. This Code of Conduct also applies to:
- Trainee teachers working as interns
- Newly hired Teachers
- Confirmed Teachers
- School Leaders (Coordinators, Section Heads & the senior management)
Roles and Responsibilities
Following are the basic guidelines about the roles and responsibilities of teachers according to their status in the managements team which have been taken from the SOPs designed for AST, wherein can be found further information about each:
Section Heads: AST has three Section Heads i.e. for Junior (Pre-Prep-V), Middle (V-VIIl) and Senior (lX-Xll):-
They will provide leadership to their Sections with respect to:-
(1) Administrative matters
(2) Curricular issues
(3) Personnel relations
- Answer the queries of students, their parents, members of the community, alumni etc, whether in person, by phone or mail.
- Assign responsibilities to the faculty in accordance with their expertise so as to assist students in their educational matters.
- Work with the AST Clerk to maintain consistency in the program and to coordinate the administration.
- Schedule and chair section meetings as deemed necessary and prepare the agenda for same.
- Assist in program planning and class scheduling for the Section.
- Follows the syllabus in its true spirit and complete it in time.
- Coordinate curricular planning and articulate curricular concerns for the Section to the department chair.
- Perform, observe and conform to such duties and instructions assigned by the institution to attend staff meetings, teacher training programmes and other official functions is mandatory.
- Perform duties with honesty, dedication and commitment to the sacred cause of grooming students as per AST Motto.
- Expected to display very high standard of conduct and behavior while being respectful and cooperative team member.
- Truthfulness, honesty and sincerity will be the hallmark of Section Heads personal conduct while at AST.
- Syllabus breakup in consultation with Vice Principal.
- To give feedback about teacher performance to the Principal.
- Perform the assigned task in the stipulated time frame.
- Monitor the discipline of teachers / students.
- Organize the calendar of events house wise.
- Breakup of students – house wise
- Make himself / herself available to the teachers for their assistance / guidance.
- Ensure that the class teachers take the students’ attendance in the register regularly.
- To ensure that student copies and diaries are checked regularly by the concerned teachers.
Coordinator/Controller of Examination. Will be responsible to the Principal for all matters pertaining to sections with the particulars to:-
- Ensure smooth and efficient running of sections administratively and academically.
- Ensure that all teachers complete the syllabi of their respective subjects/ classes in stipulate /scheduled time frame.
- Will intimate the all disciplinary cases to the Principal.
- Ensure that morning assembly (with the help of Section Head) is regularly held and all classes are given equal opportunity to make suitable presentations of short duration under the guidance of class teacher.
- Ensure that time table of various classes is accurately prepared and properly implemented.
- Ensure punctuality of teachers in the classes. In case of leave or absence of any teacher’s alternate will be marked well in time.
- Ensure regular writing and submission of Lesson plans to the Principal as per instruction.
- Ensure maintenance of a separate short leave register.
- Ensure that Parent Teacher Meetings are regularly held.
- Ensure that all teachers enter their arrival and departure time in the teacher’s attendance register accurately.
- Ensure Assessments/Terminal Exams/Checkpoint Tests are held properly.
- Arrange Teacher’s training workshops for their grooming.
- Ensure secrecy and safe custody of exam papers.
- Conduct admission tests and preparation of their results.
- Conduct interviews of transfer cases students.
- Ensure proper implementation of scheduled time table in its true spirit.
- Ensure coordination between teaching staff and management.
- Ensure submission of date sheet for terminal exams after consulting section Heads.
- Organize co-curricular / extra-curricular activities for the students.
- will be the supervisor of Examination Committee
- The Controller of Examinations shall be responsible for making all the arrangements necessary for holding exams, tests and timely declaration of results.
- Prepare academic calendar including examination schedule and their implementation.
- The Controller of Examination shall be the in-charge of conducting exams, tests and the declaration of result. He/she shall discharge his functions under the direct superintendence, direction and guidance of the Principal.
- Appoint examiners and moderators as prescribed in the rules & regulations.
- Arrange the printing of question papers, answer books and their safe custody to the concerned.
- Manage proper evaluation and to prepare the result.
- Postpone or cancel examination in part or in whole, in the event where such need arises.
- Submit report regarding exam (s) to the Principal.
- The Controller of Examinations shall exercise such other powers and perform such other duties as may be assigned to her/him, from time to time, by the Principal.
- Supervision of library in coordination with the librarian.
- Maintaining library discipline as per SOP / Rules.
- Arrange different sports events, in accordance calendar of events with the coordination of PTI.
- Maintain Computer Lab with the coordination of Lab Assistant.
Class in Charge/Teacher. Will be nominated by the Section Head and will be responsible for the following duties: –
- To check daily attendance and maintain the class register.
- To take care of the academics and disciplinary problems, bringing to the notice of Section Head/Vice Principal/Principal, cases require special attention.
- Compiling the monthly, terminal & annual tests/assessments results.
- Selection of proctors/prefects for the class.
- Checking of uniform and cleanliness of students.
- Reporting to the Principal /Vice Principal about any breakage or damage to AST property.
- Checking of cleanliness of the class room and performance charts etc for the class room after consulting the Principal / Vice Principal / Section Head.
- Taking due care of unhealthy children and informing the Section Head if segregation is required.
- Due attention to children having accidents and taking them to First Aid room / Hospital after reporting the matter to the Section Head.
- Responsible for reporting the case of a student who is being marked absent for more than a week and ensure necessary action.
- Set homework and plan “out of class activities” to extend the knowledge and understanding of the students.
- Manage class effectively.
- Demonstrate the positive attitudes, values and behavior, which are expected from teachers.
- Participate in any relevant meetings/ professional development opportunities at the AST.
- Work as a team member and identify opportunities for working with colleagues and sharing the development of effective practice with them.
- Participate and carry out any administrative and organizational tasks within the AST.
- Perform, observe and conform to such duties and instructions as will be assigned / given by the institution. Attendance at staff meetings, teacher training programs and in other official functions is mandatory.

- Expected to display a very high standard of conduct and behavior while being respectful and a cooperative team member.
Teacher: Will serve under the supervision of Section Head. He / she will be responsible for the implementation of all policies laid down for the purpose of running AST from time to time. In addition, a teacher will perform the following duties.
- Prepare and deliver lessons to a range of classes of different ages and abilities.
- Mark work, give appropriate feedback and maintain records of pupils’ progress and development.
- Research new topic areas, maintaining up-to-date subject knowledge, devise and write new curriculum materials.
- Select and use a range of different learning resources and equipment.
- Prepare pupils for qualifications and external examinations.
- Manage pupil behavior in the classroom as well as inside the AST premises, and apply appropriate and effective measures in misbehavior cases.
- Prepare the question papers as per schedule and subsequently prepare the results well in time.
- Ensure to check class work and home work daily.
- Teachers are advised not to sit in the class room.
- Prepare lesson plans one week in advance and submit to the section Head.
- Teachers should always be dressed up decently and conduct themselves as Role Models for the students.
- Parents Teacher meetings are to be conducted through the Principal. Avoid having direct contact with the parents. Avoid giving telephone numbers or home addresses to parents.
- Ensure to visit the class room before Assembly, check the cleanliness and students seating arrangements and ensure that other allied facilities are in proper working condition. .
- After the break, line up your students and accompany them to the classrooms.
- Supporting pupils, on an individual basis, through academic or personal difficulties.
- Communicate with parents over pupils’ progress and participate in departmental meetings and whole AST training events.
- Undergo regular observations and participate in regular in-service training as part of continuing professional development.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Principal/ V.P/ Section Heads/Coordinator from time to time.
- Perform, observe and conform to such duties and instructions which are assigned and given by the institution. Attendance at staff meetings, teacher training programmes and in official functions is mandatory.
- Perform duties with honesty, dedication and commitment to the sacred cause of grooming students as per the Motto of AST.
- Expected to display a very high standard of conduct and behavior while being a respectful and cooperative team member.
- Truthfulness, honesty and sincerity will be the hallmark of Teacher’s personal conduct while at AST.
Art Teacher: Art teacher will be responsible to:-
- Prepare the board according to occasion.
- Plan the lesson of Art weekly.
- Design such art activities that develop students’ aesthetic sense.
- Enhance art skills in students.
- Make the cards for different days i.e. mother’s day, color day etc.
- Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing and painting.
- Instruct students to take proper care of while, using tools and equipment.
- Organize and arrange art exhibition.
- Perform any other duty assigned by the administration.
Assistant Teacher (Junior Wing). Assistant Teacher is responsible to:-
- Assist the Master teacher.
- Prepare white/notice board.
- Make Flash Cards.
- Help Master teacher in adopting different Methodologies.
- Look after kids during lecture by Master teacher.
- Help Master teacher in completing the late and absent work of kids.
- Provide assistance in all classes, if necessary, perform duty in other class as a substitute teacher.
- Ensure students’ discipline inside/outside the class.
- Supervise students in the class, during lunch and recess, and on field trips.
- Enforce school and class rules and help the students to follow it.
- Help teachers in preparation of lesson plan by getting materials ready or setting up equipment such as computers.
- Reinforce lessons presented by teachers by reviewing material with students one-on-one or in small groups
- Perform any other duty assigned by the administration.
Librarian. Will serve under the supervision of Principal. He / she will be responsible for the implementation of all policies laid down from time to time. In addition, a Librarian will perform the following duties:-
- Assist with finding reference materials and leisure reading materials when asked.
- Work as a partner with teaching staff in the education process.
- Be an acknowledged expert in resource and information provision/ management.
- Be a leader in creating and developing a climate to promote and support reading for pleasure across the AST.
- Be an acknowledged partner with all departments. Provide support and resource at each key stage.
- Maintain library inventory and conduct periodic audits of the information on file and computer.
- Read stories to groups of children and conduct play time afterward.
- Create and implement new programs to attract learners.
- Check books and other materials in and out of the library.
- Manage the budget resources.
- Manage the acquisitions of new materials.
- Perform any other duty assigned by the AST administration.
- Responsible for acquiring, organizing, managing and distributing library resources.
- Assist readers to use computer equipment and conduct literature searches etc.
- Send messages to the parents related to students (Senior Wing) about fee or any other information.
Moral Values & Ethics
Teachers are advised to teach good manners to the students by displaying the highest standard of modest and ethical behavior at all times. Students should be modelled to respect elders and to be kind to their young ones. Teachers at all times must portray a character that is in accordance with the true spirit of Islam.
- DRESS CODE
We expect our teachers to be appropriately dressed at all times (smart/casual). No Jeans or Trainers should be worn at any time. See details in the detailed document.
- ARRIVAL TIME
It is expected that all teachers arrive at school 15 min before school starting time for students.
- NO TOUCHING POLICY
You must never initiate or encourage any physical contact with a child and that includes patting them on the back.
Obviously there are exceptions to this in specific circumstances (for example when someone’s physical safety is at risk) but then it is a matter of common sense.
- LANGUAGE
You should never swear in front of students but, additionally, slang words and terms or phrases commonly used by some people can be offensive to others. Therefore it is very important to be sensitive to this and avoid colloquialisms at all times.
